What is the difference between Ellis Island and Liberty Island?

Answer: Although these are two small islands located close to each other, they are very different. Liberty Island is the well known island where the famous Statue of Liberty stands. If you choose to visit it, you can of course see the statue up close and even purchase special tickets to access the pedestal or the crown.

A few years ago, the Statue of Liberty Museum also opened on the island. It presents the history and creation of the statue, including interactive exhibits, a short film about the construction process, and the original torch that was removed from the statue in the 1980s. Entry to the museum is included with every ferry ticket.

Ellis Island, on the other hand, served as the main immigration station of the United States between 1892 and 1954. More than 12 million immigrants passed through its processing facilities.

Today the island is a national immigration museum that displays stories, documents, photographs and artifacts from this historical period. It is a visit with a strong historical, cultural and human character.

The ferry ticket to the Statue of Liberty includes access to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and no separate ticket is required.
